Carjacking suspect dies during southern California arrest

Posted September 14

— Authorities in southern California are investigating after a man died while being arrested shortly after they say he assaulted a parking control officer and stole her vehicle.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says a parking control officer for the city of Rosemead was punched in the head by the suspect while writing a ticket early Tuesday morning. Deputies say he then took her city vehicle and fled.

Deputies caught up with the man at a nearby McDonald's restaurant about 20 minutes later. They say they responded with force after he lunged at one of them. Deputies say the man became unresponsive after being restrained and handcuffed. A department spokeswoman says no shots were fired, but didn't specify what type of force was used.

The man's identity hasn't been released.
