Car slams into Raleigh building

Raleigh, N.C. — A car slammed into a brick pillar supporting a building in west Raleigh on Friday afternoon.
People who work in the building, at 3116 Hillsborough St., said a Volkswagen sedan plowed into the pillar shortly before 2:30 p.m., and a metal beam then crashed through the car's windshield.
No one was hurt in the incident.
The driver told people at the scene that his brakes failed.
Raleigh inspectors checked out the building, which has two floors of apartments in addition to the businesses on the ground floor, and told people it was safe to return to their homes and to work.
A work crew then arrived to clear the pile of bricks from in front of the building.
