ELM CITY, N.C. — A veteran volunteer firefighter was killed Wednesday night when a woman accidentally ran over him in a convenience store parking lot in Elm City, authorities said Friday.

Mary Sanders Young, 66, of Elm City, was backing out of a parking space outside the Short Stop Food Mart, at 102 S. Parker St., when she backed into a concrete barrier next to the gas pump, according to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office. She then put the car in drive and "mashed the gas pedal," authorities said, and the car lurched forward and hit Donald Robert Felts.

Felts, 66, of Elm City, was pinned against an ice machine outside the store and died at the scene.

Young was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation, authorities said.

"This has saddened our small town. Donald was Elm City. A kind soul who knew and loved everyone," Ellen Edmundson said in an email to WRAL News. "Since his death crowds have gathered in front of the spot where he was killed to grieve and share memories of how he touched their lives."

The incident remains under investigation.
