PITTSBORO, N.C. — A car crashed into the fencing and scaffolding surrounding the Chatham County Courthouse on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The fencing has been in place since March 25 when the courthouse was severely damaged by a fire.

Authorities said the driver of a late-model Dodge Charger was unable to stop as he entered the traffic circle around the courthouse just after 2 p.m.

The driver, Salmon David Alston, was transported by ambulance to a hospital, said Chatham County spokeswoman Debra J. Henzey. His injuries did not appear to be serious.

The scaffolding was apparently not severely damaged, Henzey said. A wrecker had been called to remove the vehicle.
