— An accident caused some minor delays early Thursday for motorists heading into Raleigh.

At least four vehicles were involved in the accident near the intersection of Capital Boulevard and Deana Road shortly after 7 a.m., authorities said. Two cars were involved in the initial accident and were then rear-ended by two other cars.

Some injured people were reportedly transported to WakeMed, but police declined to release more details.

Five southbound lanes of Capital Boulevard were blocked as crews worked to remove the wreckage.

Police said the scene was cleared by 8:47a.m., and all lanes of Capital Boulevard have since reopened to traffic.

As long as people drive bumper to bumper and exceed the speed limit, there's going to be pileups like this. If people would just allow the safe interval in between cars, it could be avoided. But I find, increasingly more people will spot your "interval" and speed up, pass you and slide into it. Bumper to bumper is fine for Amtrak...but it just doiesn't work with highway traffic. But alas, I am preaching to an empty church.

I totally agree with everything you said but if you travel Capital Blvd. on a regular basis the way others drive will soon dictate the way you behave behind the wheel. If only there was some way to prevent those who "whip" in front of you when you try and leave just 1/2 car following distance , it would be a much nicer ride in for us all. Its the most stressful part of my day but I drive as required to keep the swerving to a minimum.

The important part of this story isn't how it happened, how it might have happened (gossip) or who's to blame. The important part is that there was an accident where people may have been hurt, and that's what we should be concentrating on - not complaining, gossipping or surmising.

    Praying for all.

    God bless.

This is hog wash at it's finest. How it happened DOES matter.May be that will make it preventable.

1 of, I rarely drive in the fast lane on the Beltline. Even if I'm there driving 5-15 miles over the speed limit, people are crowding my bumper and no one will let me over to get out of their way.

Now, going North on I-95, I'm in the fast lane doing 80-85, that doesn't bother me. People seem more well behaved on the super highways, maybe because they have accepted that they have a long drive ahead and just chill out. The Beltline traffic is local folks racing to get somewhere on time.

Concerning I-540. The corridor for that highway was developed in the early to mid 70's. Land was blocked off so houses could not be built there. Nobody saw or reallized how Wake Forest and beyond would develop.
The southern end was not protected as well. WE may never see the southern end built in our lifetime. The I-40 East interchange with the Clayton US 70 Bypass will also be an exit for I-540 when it's built.
What we need is for our Legislature to quit stealing from the highway trust fund so we can get on with additional construction and maintenence. Our den of thieves in Raleigh does us in again.

Sounds like you need to stay in the right lane (slow drivers) and stay out of the fast lane

People don't know how to drive.

Drove by the clean-up and one car took a good t-bone on the drivers side. I hope that everyone is ok.

Old Rebel is right, there is hardly any chance anymore of keeping a safe following distance. And if you slow down, you get honked at and “digit”ized. Folks drive like traffic is one big computer game where you have to score points.

And merging onto 440 is a nightmare. People won’t move over or adjust their speed to accommodate you. Others hopscotch from lane to lane so they can drive faster. It’s like the Joey Chitwood Show every day.
