Cape Lookout to open to climbers in mid-May

One of North Carolina's most recognizable lighthouses will open to visitors on May 14.

CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. — One of North Carolina's most recognizable lighthouses will open to visitors on May 14. 

Cape Lookout will be open for climbing on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from May 14 to Sept. 20. Hours for the lighthouse will be 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. 

From July 2 to Aug. 23, hours will be 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The lighthouse will also be open during holiday weekends on May 25, July 6 and Aug. 31. 

The landmark is about three hours southeast of the Triangle.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. They are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and can only be purchased in-person on the day of climb. 

Children climbing the lighthouse must be at least 44 inches tall and be able to climb on their own. Shoes are required.

The Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras lighthouses opened Friday and will remain open through Oct. 13. Guided tours will be offered at Bodie Island, while visitors can climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at set intervals.
