Cape Fear kayakers thought missing, found safe

Erwin, N.C. — Rescue crews were called out to the Cape Fear River on Friday for a report of missing kayakers, but they soon stopped their search after everyone was accounted for.
Gary Pope with Harnett County Emergency Management said four kayakers got into trouble near the N.C. Highway 217 bridge near Erwin, and at least one of the kayaks had overturned.
When rescuers arrived, they helped two of the kayakers get to shore. The other two went ahead, Pope said, but authorities were not sure they were OK. They requested help in the search from WRAL’s SKY5 helicopter, which was already over the river.
The helicopter helped track down the remaining kayakers, and everyone was accounted for, Pope said.
