DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University was on lockdown briefly Wednesday afternoon after reports of a suspicious person on campus.

Campus police said in an alert to students, faculty and staff that someone wearing a Duke University baseball cap and carrying a backpack was spotted in or around the Alfonso Elder Student Union building on Fayetteville Road.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Durham police officers responded to a call about a suspicious person with a weapon in the 500 block of Nelson Street – about a half-mile from the student union, according to a police spokeswoman. When they arrived, campus police were already at the scene.

Campus police gave an "all-clear" after being unable to locate anyone with a weapon, and the lockdown was lifted around 1:45 p.m.
