Campaign pushing to expand gambling in New Jersey suspended

— A footwear magnate and a racetrack operator behind an effort to persuade New Jersey voters to approve casinos in the northern part of the state are ending the campaign.

Former Reebok chairman Paul Fireman and Meadowlands Racetrack operator Jeff Gural said Thursday the political climate and voters' concerns about lack of detail about the expansion led to their decision.

The campaign included TV, radio and digital ads asking voters to approve a proposed constitutional amendment expanding gambling.

The amendment that proposes opening two casinos in northern Jersey is on the November ballot. Lawmakers still back it, but there's no other visible outside support for it.

Fireman and Gural had proposed building new gambling venues. They cite polling data showing voters don't trust politicians to use proceeds how they promise.
