Camp Lejeune cancels Fourth of July celebration

— Camp Lejeune officials announced Tuesday that Fourth of July events for the public will be canceled this year because of federal budget cuts.

While there will be no fireworks display, the Marine base plans to have free activities on the holiday for active-duty personnel, veterans, retirees and their family members. The activities include golf, bowling, skeet shooting, archery and free movies at the base theater, according to a news release from the base. Marina and other recreational fees will be waived that day.

The announcement follows a similar one from Fort Bragg in April, when post officials said they also canceled Fourth of July because of money woes. The event at Fort Bragg has drawn more than 50,000 people since it began 30 years ago, but officials said they could not afford the $120,000 in overtime costs for the celebration this year.

Camp Lejeune leaders did not specify how much savings would come from nixing this year’s Fourth of July.

“Our continued support to the operating forces, our Wounded Warriors and our families always comes first,” Brig. Gen. Thomas Gorry said in a statement. “I didn’t make this decision lightly as I understand how important this event is to our service members and the local community, but canceling it will allow us to use all available resources to ensure we can mitigate the fiscal challenges we are currently facing.”

Or maybe if we have saved some of the money Bush spent on vacations(he took more than Obama) or had some of the money back that he spent invading Iraq to find those phantom WOMD, we wouldn't be where we are today.

    >>>>That's a lie if ever there was told one. Collin Powell saw the evidence, convinced the U.N., it was there and the capability to make....don't hear you LIBS talking smack about him.

We could buy one less tank from Haliburton this year and fund July 4th. When we are so obsessed with austerity that we can't celebrate our nation's most important day it is sad indeed.

Free market/capitalist society, gotta cut when necessary, however, Haliburton doesn't make tanks, and the Marines never buy from or rent the contract services from them.

Oh well.... I'm sure the Army looked very hard at ALL the possible places to be cut before picking the Forth of July event.

It's the Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune, not the army....

"Bartmeister: Who in the heck is Barry?"

That is the "derogatory" name that they use when they are talking about Obama. It's used as a slur of some type. It's more PC than that other term they use for people of color.

Just another conservative buzz word that they like to throw around. Makes them feel like they are doing good.

    >>>Spoken like a true lying LIB, once again misinformation, "Barry", is actually his given name that he used in highschool and most if not all of college. He didn't change it until he became a community organizer...

ncouterbanks69, yeah that's a good one. Make all the lazy people get jobs. Uh huh. Except Bush put the economy in the toilet and destroyed millions of jobs. God, it's easy for your kind to just label everybody who is out of work or sick or poor. And the funny thing is that your kind is enriching the rich and hurting people like you, but you just follow the leader just like you are told to. You don't care how much the rich hurt you as long as you still have someone below you to defecate on.
