Camp Lejeune-based Marine killed in combat in Afghanistan

Military officials say a North Carolina-based Marine was killed in Afghanistan.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Military officials say a North Carolina-based Marine was killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced on Friday that 22-year-old Lance Cpl. Gavin R. Brummund, of Arnold, Calif., died on Thursday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.

Brummund was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.

Brummond joined the Marine Corps in March 2007, and was promoted to the rank of lance corporal on May 1, 2008.

He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from April to October 2008 and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2010.

His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Brummond is survived by his wife.
