Cadet files lawsuit against Rocky Mount

Posted July 8, 2008

— A former police cadet, who claims she lost her job over an affair with the police chief, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the city of Rocky Mount and its police chief.

Shirley Moore claims Chief John Manley had an affair with her, paid for an abortion, and then forced her to resign last year.

Moore failed portions of a WRAL sponsored polygraph test. Her answers about the affair came back inconclusive.

The city's own investigation cleared Manley in May.

Moore and her husband filed the suit in civil court.

It seeks damages for severe emotional distress, discrimination and alienation of affection.

Re: Hereandnow- You are exactly right concerning the Polygraph. Opinions are just that:OPINIONS. The following statement is a fact: In a CRIMINAL CASE,the jury must unanimiously reach a verdict that the defendant(s) are guilty:BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. In a CIVIL CASE, the defendant(s) are judged by A POPONDERANCE OF THE EVIDENCE-meaning, is it MORE likely than NOT that the defendant(s) are guilty. Oh, by the way, this is the 2ND female cadet to have this VERY SAME EXPERIENCE.

I agree with you all who says her husband needs help (mentally). I am not understanding why he is co-signing to what she does (law suits etc.). Well, I guess he is trying to get his cut of money or maybe his self esteem is so low that he is blinded about what his wife has and is doing. I am all for making marriages work but BOTH individuals have to work hard at it. Besides, we haven't seen the chief's wife making comments so why does Mrs. Moore's husband has to be in on law suits.

    Give me a break.

Those results don't mean a thing. There is no scientific basis for lie detectors and they just don't work. http://antipolygraph.org/

Well, that may not be entirely true. Some people on shows like Jerry Springer or Maury are intimidated by the examiner so they THINK they work, so they confess everything. LOL

This story is getting old. The both of you did wrong and got caught. The cadet has paid for her stupidness and eventually the CHief will pay for his. The one that needs help is her husband. He needs a mental evaluation for being a part of this.

Opportunistic. Girl, go out and get you a job and quit trying to get something for nothing. I can look at you and tell you are trouble. One of these who love to sue for anything.

Wait a minute, she AND her husband filed the suit? So her husband doesn't care that she slept with another man and aborted a baby that could have very well been his own? And he's still with her???? This all sounds very messed up. I think they're just looking their "due check".

She's just looking for something for nothing, she made a bunch of stuff up. The poly proves it. It's the going thing around Rocky Mount, everyone tries to get something for nothing either by suing in this case or down at the social services building.

I think this lady needs to chalk this up as experience. She was just as grown as the Chief was. Trust me, he is not getting away with his evil deeds. However, he has been exposed and so has she. She knew he was married and he knew he was married.

Both should be ashamed, but she is definitely scorned and can't realize she made a terrible error in judgment in trying to advance her career. She act like she is still in love with him.

I'm at the point that any lawsuit against Rocky Mount is fine by me.
