Cabela's in Garner opening today!

Posted April 16, 2015

— If you have been anxiously awaiting the opening of the new Cabela's store in Garner, I have great news for you. Cabela's opens today, Thursday, April 16th!

The new 105,000-square-foot store is located at 201 Cabela Drive near the intersection of Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 70. It is right across from the White Oak Shopping Center on Hwy. 70.

Cabela's is kicking off the grand opening with a very unique ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:45 am. At the end of the ceremony, the ribbon will be cut by an arrow shot from a bow. They will have live music starting as early as 8 am according to the sale flyer in the newspaper on Wednesday, 4/15.

The store will open for business at 10 am after the ribbon cutting.

This is the first Cabela's North Carolina location and they are planning a weekend-long celebration including special appearances, family events, live entertainment, giveaways and more. On Friday, you can meet Jack Link's Sasquatch and NC State University's Mr. and Mrs. Wuf. There will even be a mobile aquarium on site on Saturday! See all the details and event times on their website.

There will be giveaways on multiple days including:

Thursday, April 16: The first 500 in line on Thursday will get a Cabela's gift card worth up to $500! Limit 1 per person.

Friday, April 17: First 50 people will get a Cabela's Utility Bag

Saturday, April 18: First 50 people will get a Cabela's cap

Sunday, April 19: First 50 people will get a Cabela's tripod stool

Customers will also have a chance to win a $1000 Cabela's gift card or a GoPro camera.

According to their press release, "the store will employ approximately 225 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, most coming from Garner and the surrounding area. The store is designed to surround customers in a fun, outdoor-like experience with log construction, stonework, a large mountain replica, aquarium, indoor archery range and dozens of museum-quality wildlife displays. Also, it will include a deli, fudge shop, boat shop, Gun Library and Bargain Cave."

I had no idea this store would have a mountain, aquarium, indoor archery range, deli and fudge shop. I am looking forward to going, with or without the kids!

The store’s staff will offer educational seminars and demonstrations throughout the year providing tips and insight on outdoor products and activities.

If you are new to Cabela’s, they offer hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and wildlife-watching gear, as well as clothing and outdoor-themed gifts and furnishings.

Are you (or your spouse) excited about the new Cabela's?

My original post was written in haste and may not have effectively conveyed my points. Lets address this in two parts. The Size: The Cabela's is listed at 105k sqft. The Bass Pro Shops quotes their Cary location as being 105k sqft. The layout and even the aquarium location and appearance are almost identical. Leading to point #2... Unique Appeal: I have been to 6 other Cabela's locations and all of them were as much of an attraction as they were a store. They have walk through aquariums, shooting galleries, restaurants, entire rooms full of animal displays, running streams with live fish, etc... this store has none of the attraction appeal.

My disappointment stems from my past experiences and heightened expectations. The Cabela's in Garner, NC does not compare in grandeur to other locations and it doesn't distinguish itself from similar stores in the area. It is unfortunate we did not get the full potential of their capability.

3--I noticed their parking lot was 100% full on Monday. Their opening day was today, Thursday. I contacted Cabelas corp and they replied that corp "knew nothing" about the opening and that it was "employee training". They didn't know their store was open? Next I found out that they "invited" select retail location managers and select city, county and state officials to a "special" opening. A second was held for "C

    My Cabelas Experience---Part 2
On Tuesday and Wednesday, they held more "secret" openings for "Cabelas Club Members". No doubt they most likely have Cabelas Visa cards. This why there was "no traffic or camping out" when WIDOWMAKER085 shopped there. I'm pretty sure that Cabelas will not sell me any "VISA" cards or anything else.

    My Cabelas Experience-----1
1--I am a retired retail manager and I applied to Cabelas as a p/t stock clerk / merchandiser. I got an interview. During the interview the team representing Cabelas made it VERY clear that Cabelas bases their employees "performance" on the number of Cabelas Visa accounts they open. With 35 years of successful retail management experience, I knew that this was a "warning alarm". The team made a pivotal point about the charge card, but no so much on customer service. I passed them over. I haven't had to do that in 35 years and I'm not starting now. (SEE PART 2)

Go rain on someone else's parade. I'm sure there are thousands like myself that have been waiting for Cabela's to open a store in the somewhat local area. I drove from Franklinton for the Club Card opening on Wednesday, & was pleased with my experience. The staff was very welcoming.
There was no traffic & no one camping out.

MACK24, what did you expect on the first day open? Give it some time, you can easily walk around BPS or F&S now.

Anyone know if BPS will match Cabelas' sales?

  • mack24 Apr 16, 2015

What a mess. Turned around and left.
I'll stick with Field & Stream.
