Bystander to Zebulon fight shot in head

Posted February 4, 2011

— A bystander to a fight outside his house in Zebulon late Thursday was struck in the head with a bullet, Police Chief Timothy Hayworth said.

Hayworth said witnesses stated that Alonza Jamal Hunter, 21, got into an altercation with a person, then pulled out a gun and started firing outside 712 Shepard School Road around 11:20 p.m.

One round struck Jonathan Trevon Smith, 19, who was sitting in a parked car, the police chief said. He was taken to a local medical center, where he was undergoing emergency care early Friday.

Smith was not the intended target, Hayworth said.

Hunter, of 6470 Winters Road in Middlesex, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has not yet appeared before a magistrate.

Hayworth said that the investigation was ongoing, and more charges might be filed.

Can we please just hang ppl like this and be done with it? No need for them to spend years in prison watching tv in the ac/heat... finish them now.. he knew better, and should have to pay the ultimate price for it. I would go and watch the hangings of ppl like this.

Give this man 30 years. He deserves it and no early parole either.

The courts should get him a hair-cut off. Then he will be clean cut when he enters prison.

Shot in the head, that is pretty serious and I do hope he survives. Pray for him.

then pulled out a gun and started firing outside 712 Shepard School Road around 11:20 p.m.

What was this man doing with the loaded gun in the first place? Was the gun registered? An innocent man was shot in the head. What more do some of you people need? He needs about 30 years in prison.

A lot of you guys are saying that he should have to do hard labor in prison.

At least he will be all the streets for a long while. Prison will do him good. He will not be so bad there.

Sorry @Classified, but age doesn't necessarily mean wisdom, or the ability to see things from all angles. In fact, older people are often more set in their ways, and more unlikely to admit when they might be wrong.

I wish there was a way to set up a "country" virtually, let it be run by college age kids vs. one run by middle aged people. I'd bet the college age group would do better, especially the way the world is now.

This is the very reason why some people don't need loaded guns in their possesion ever. Charges should be filed to all those involved. They should not be allowed to get away with this. My prayers to the innocent person who was shot.
