By the numbers: Wednesday's severe weather outbreak

Dozens of communities in central and eastern North Carolina were cleaning up Thursday after a midweek round of severe thunderstorms and at least one tornado that touched down in Granville County.

A look at the numbers associated with Wednesday's severe weather outbreak across North Carolina:

The National Weather Service confirmed Thursday that an EF-2 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 125 mph touched down at 4:32 p.m. Wednesday in Granville County and remained on the ground for five miles. The tornado ripped apart homes and downed dozens of trees along Huntsboro Road northeast of Oxford. No serious injuries were reported.Thursday afternoon, two additional tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in Duplin County.

Based on local storm reports submitted to the Storm Prediction Center, there were more than two dozen reports of hail at least 1 inch in diameter across the state. The largest hail may have been in Granville and Vance counties, where there were reports of 2-to 3-inch diameter hail.

The National Weather Service offices in eastern North Carolina – based in Raleigh, Wilmington and Morehead City – issued 21 severe thunderstorm warnings during the outbreak. Fifteen of those were issued by the Raleigh office.

The same NWS offices issued 30 tornado warnings during the day in North Carolina. The office in Raleigh issued 21 of those.

Wind damage reports were spread around the state and had a large effect on trees and power lines. Some roofs and cars were also damaged.
