BUTNER, N.C. — Butner police charged Mildred Michelle Hinton Davis, 52, with second-degree murder Monday night in the shooting death of her longtime, live-in boyfriend, William Albert McMillan.

Police were called to the home they shared, at 507 E. F St., just before 6 p.m. and found McMillan dead inside. Davis was taken to the Granville County Jail, where she was being held Tuesday under a $100,000 secured bond.

Neighbor Georgetta Carrington said Davis was a former mail carrier and McMillan a truck driver. She described the couple as sweet and quiet.

"I don't know what could have triggered this," she said. "It's not something I ever would have expected. "

Another neighbor said Davis was sitting on the front steps when police arrived.
