RALEIGH, N.C. — Expecting a state tax refund this year?

Beth Stevenson, director of public affairs for the North Carolina Department of Revenue, said Tuesday that taxpayers can expect their refunds within 45 days of when they file, as long as there are no errors on the paperwork.

The average refund this year, so far, is $534, Stevenson said.

As of Monday, the revenue department has issued 1.5 million individual refunds for a total of $792 million. Last year at this time, it issued 1.4 million refunds, amounting to $743 million.

One reason why more returns have been processed is because more people are filing electronically, Stevenson said.

Taxpayers who haven't received their refund with 45 days can call the Department of Revenue at 877-252-3052 to check on their status.

Haven't filed your taxes yet? They are due April 17.
