MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Lenovo, the world’s No. 4 PC manufacturer, is adding 300 people to its Triangle workforce in order to support its growing global customer base, officials said Friday.

With sales soaring and product shipments growing over recent quarters, the China-born company has set its sights on surpassing Acer as the No. 3 PC firm. Hewlett-Packard is the top computer seller globally, followed by Dell.

Most of Lenovo’s operations and business is done in China, but the company is steadily growing its global market share into double digits. Data from research firms such as IDC and Gartner have shown Lenovo as the fastest growing PC company in the world.

Lenovo acquired IBM’s personal computer business, which was based in Raleigh, five years ago and operates its headquarters out of a multi-building campus in Morrisville. The company plans to add 50 jobs there, and it has signed a deal with Affiliated Computer Services to provide 250 customer support representatives.

The ACS staff will support Lenovo customers in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A subsidiary of Xerox, the company employs 2,300 people in the Triangle area and 3,600 across the state.

"We're obsessed with delivering outstanding PC technology and world-class service and support to our customers," said Peter Bartolotta, the senior vice president for global services at Lenovo. "Our collaboration with ACS will elevate our already acclaimed support services through faster, highly integrated and more effective call-center interaction utilizing the latest technologies."
