SANFORD, N.C. — Coty Inc., which makes perfumes and cosmetics, will expand its operation in Sanford, creating 140 jobs, officials said Thursday.

The $12 million expansion will add eight production lines to make nail polish, and production is scheduled to begin in March.

Vice President and General Manager Brian O'Neil said the Sanford plant was selected for the new production lines in a competitive process.

"We've had success in the past, thanks to our exceptional employees and a supportive business climate, and we look forward to being a part of this community for many years to come," O'Neil said in a statement.

Coty already employs more than 800 people in Sanford to make perfumes and lotions under the brands of Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, Jennifer Lopez, adidas and others.

The expansion in Sanford comes as Coty is shutting down an operation in Pender County.

The company acquired the plant in Rocky Point three years ago and decided to close it as part of a global consolidation effort. About 400 manufacturing and distribution jobs are being eliminated with the closure.
