Fowler Contracting plans to close its operations by April 4 and lay off about 300 people, according to a letter given to employees Wednesday.

The company does site development for real estate projects, including clearing and grading land, installing utilities, curb and gutter work and landscaping.

The company cited "adverse economic conditions" for the closing, according to the letter."

Fowler Contracting was founded in 1984 and has been recognized in recent years as one of the region's fastest-growing private companies. President and Chief Executive Steve Fowler was named an entrepreneur of the year in 2006 by accounting and consulting firm Ernst & Young.

A whole batch of quality people and their famalies are saddened by this news. This company was run by a group of people with vision and an unmatched work ethic. This news hits close to home for a lot of us.

This is a shock. This was the company that others tried to be like. Very efficient, some of the best people in the industry, great people to work with. It's hard to believe that they couldn't make it through these tough times.

The poor men that have to find jobs in that industry in this economy.

I worked for Fowler Contracting years ago and I want to wish Steve Fowler all the best and I do hope his employees successfully find other jobs.
