— Eaton Corp. (NYSE: ETN), which employs some 700 people in the Raleigh area and 4,000 across the state, is reducing its work force.

In Eaton’s electrical division in Raleigh, 33 positions are being cut, said company spokesperson Kelly Jasko.

The company, which is based in Cleveland, Ohio, cited the global economic slowdown as the reason for the layoffs.

Eaton is scheduled to announce quarterly earnings on Jan. 26. Jasko said more details about the layoffs would be disclosed at that time.

Last fall, Eaton took over a vacant Flextronics facility in Youngsville and planned to transfer some 100 workers from its North Raleigh operations to Franklin County.

“My understanding is that all the facilities in the Raleigh area will continue to operate,” Jasko said.

Eaton, which has some 80,000 employees spread across more than 150 countries, manufacturers aerospace, truck and military equipment, including electrical systems and power train systems. Eaton laid off more than 3,000 workers in 2008.

Jasko said that laid-off workers will be paid through the end of January and will be eligible for severance benefits.

"According to Jack Welch the bottom 10% of performers within the company need to "let go" every year to make the organization stronger."

That doen't work in a "lay-off" since they don't let go of the bottom 10%. They let go highly compensated personnel to get the most out of the lay-off. it has nothing to do with performance!

How can there be more pressing issues than people losing their jobs??? That leaves them with no income, no food, no health care and possibly lose their home!!! What is wrong with this world? Do people just not care about the welfare of others anymore?

I take it "tobis19341" that you still have a job?!? I have a son-in-law that happens to work at Eaton and I don't think that 33 lay offs is not that much, it's too much either way! I pray to God he does not get laid off as for others as well. My daughter has health problems as well and they also need their health insurance. People need their jobs, they have families to take care of. Don't depend on obama to wave his magic wand because it is just not going to happen. We are in a recession and that leads to a depression. There is no magic here! All we can do is pray and work together to keep this country together as a whole.....

According to Jack Welch the bottom 10% of performers within the company need to "let go" every year to make the organization stronger. From my calculation there are still 37 people at the EATON plant that need to go!!

Tobis, I agree..see how many people leave their jobs or get fired at IBM, Duke Hospital, SAS every month and although it might not be 33, I bet it is close.

  • kellyfwilson2 Jan 20, 2009

What an awful way to start your day...you drive in, risk your life in the treacherous conditions, just for someone to tell you that you can go home, you are being laid off.

  • tobis19341 Jan 20, 2009

is this really news. 33 workers isn't that much. sure it sucks for those losing their jobs, but there's more pressing issues going on in the country today, like a 4% drop in the dow.
