Handcrafted furnishings store Porto shuts down

Company, which launched in 2004, operated stores in North Hills, Chapel Hill

RALEIGH, N.C. — Porto, a furniture store offering hand-crafted furnishings at stores in North Hills and Chapel Hill, has shut down.

Special orders will be filled, co-owners Michael Perry and Emily Barret, said in a statement Friday.

Perry and Barret cited the downturn in the housing industry as the reason for closing.

“Porto was founded on the premise that our responsibilities extend beyond the showroom doors,” Perry said. “Emily and I were determined that our collections would be designed and manufactured by companies who practice environmental and social responsibility, and be of the highest quality available. And we knew that what we offered was of heirloom quality. It would last rather than fall apart and end up in a landfill.”

The co-owners launched Porto in 2004.
