Chatham firm recalls chicken salad
Bost Distributing Co. is recalling about 1,200 pounds of chicken salad products containing eggs that are the subject of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall due to concerns about contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Posted — UpdatedThe Bear Creek firm is recalling 30-pound boxes of Harold Food Co. Grand Strand Deluxe Chicken Salad. Each box has a “Sell By” date of 2/15/2012 and bears the establishment number “P-20479” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The products were sent to a distributor in South Carolina for further distribution to supermarkets and retailers in the Carolinas and might no longer bear the identifying information because they have been repackaged as sandwiches.
Area supermarket chains that carry Bost products include Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Kroger and Lowes Foods. Walmart and the Sam's Club and Costco membership warehouses also carry the firm's products.
The FDA last week recalled hard-cooked eggs sold by Michael Foods Egg Products Co., and inspectors determined that some eggs that might be contaminated with Listeria were shipped to Bost.
There have been no reports of any illnesses linked to the chicken salad.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, which can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems.
