Firm that bought part of Nortel plans to expand
A company that purchased some of Nortel Networks' assets two years ago is expanding in the Triangle.

New Jersey-based Avaya plans to add 135 jobs over the next four years as it invests $500,000 in expanding and consolidating a supply chain center in Durham, officials said Monday.
Avaya bought the business enterprise division from bankrupt Nortel, which included part of the telecommunications company's operations in the Triangle. As part of the expansion, the company will keep 193 existing jobs in Durham, as well as 111 elsewhere in North Carolina, officials said.
The new jobs will pay an average of $87,704 a year, plus benefits. Durham County's average annual wage is $61,256.
The state Economic Investment Committee voted Monday to award a Job Development Investment Grant to Avaya. Under the JDIG, the company can receive part of the state withholding taxes from the new jobs for each of the eight years in which it meets annual performance targets, which could yield up to $1.69 million for the company.
Area community colleges also have agreed to provide $162,000 in training for Avaya's workers.
North Carolina beat out New Jersey, Colorado and Canada for the Avaya expansion, state officials said.
