Cary company's 'Gears of War' reaches $1B in sales

Posted September 29, 2011

— “Gears of War 3” is a smash hit, propelling the videogame franchise past $1 billion in sales for Epic Games.

Microsoft, the publisher of the Gears franchise for Cary-based Epic, said Thursday morning that Gears is the first game developed only for the Xbox 360 franchise to top the $1 billion mark. Many games are published across multiple platforms so they can be played on Playstation, personal computers and others.

The third installment of the franchise topped 3 million copies in sales in its first week of release, Microsoft added.

And the companies are giddy.

“Following more than 22,000 midnight madness launch events, Microsoft and Epic Games today announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive sold more than three million copies in its first week since release, cementing Gears 3 as the biggest game of 2011 and catapulting the franchise beyond one billion dollars in lifetime sales," the two firms announced.

They weren't done with the congratulations, either.

"Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since," said Phil Spencer, Microsoft's corporate vice president.

At the rate Gears 3 is selling, it could top 8 million copies sold, according to the videogame website VGChartz. If so, Gears 3 would surpass Gears 1 and 2, which have sold a combined 13 million copies.

“The franchise typically sees around 6-6.5 million units lifetime, but Gears 3 is set to buck the trend and should surpass 8 million units,” Seb Parker wrote earlier this week.

Gears 3 is already the blockbuster of the year for the videogame industry. Without a doubt, Gears is a blockbuster for Microsoft, too.

As for Epic, well, there probably will be some new sports cars in the company parking lot that already has more than a few collector's items.

I didn't see the chopper but I did see the article about crowd sourcing data models of the aids virus to gamers to produce tools for research. In 3 weeks gamers came up with what pharmy companies hadn't in 10 years with CAD.

As far as a waste of time... practicing critical thinking skills, time sensitivity, resource management, strategy and planning, reacting to unplanned occurances, coordinating diverse groups remotely... thats a heck of a lot more than a lot of the TOOLS posting complaints about gamers do.

Probably frightens the heck out of the left to have people learning to think and use thier brains instead of being indoctrinated in front of a tv screen or in a classroom.

I think this story, in general, is an indication of where the kid's attetion is and where it is not. Most of the gamers today would rather camp out in front of their big screen tv for hours and or days rather than do anything else. I can see how some could become addicted and at some point it can affect their job, relationships, and other social/society functions. Of course i'm talking about extreme cases, but nevertheless, the possibility is real and does exist.

Perry wants a different kind of government in your life. The kind that vaccinates kids and tries to stop some forms of legal medical care. Get real.

Yea good one. Maybe he can mandate taking everyones appendix out too. You know they might get appendicitis one day. Im good, I can make these decisions about my body on my own. I dont need some Texas conotrol freaks making those for me. Get it? I dont need the gov to help me through life. I dont see how some of you make it through the day with a gov official on speed dial.

Where is the liberal outcry over huge profits being made on gratuitous violence undoubtedly marketed towards children? And we wonder why our world is so violent. I'm shocked! This company should be taxed at 90% to pay for all the broken homes and prison population it helps create. Well???-mep

ROFL!!!! This comment is the funniest thing I have read today!!
You're right...let's not blame the parents that refuse to take any responsibility for their children (GASP!!),because it's sooooo much easier to blame a game on the problems in our society. Let's not blame the government that hamstrings parents by not letting them properly discipline (Yes, I mean SPANK!, their children and teach them respect. Let's not blame parents that make the CHOICE to let Playstation and XBOX raise their kids because THEY can't be bothered.

Its not a matter of where someone spends their money or on what....its not your money so why complain if someone wants to buy something for themselves.... people really need to get over themselves and find a life.....FYI. This game rocks.

As an avid gamer myself (and player of Gears 3), I feel the need to point out that video games are a scapegoat for all the violence in the world. Just think of the millions upon millions of gamers out there shooting at each other in a computer fantasy world verses the minute percentage of those folks who actually commit the type of violence they see in the game. I'm sick of seeing stories that mention a murder had a copy of Grand Theft Auto sitting by his XBox. Guess what? So do I, and I haven't killed anybody! (Well, I haven't killed anybody YET..) And let's be honest here- the VAST majority of violence in the world is going on in regions that don't even have access to games like this!

Keepin_it_Reel_in_NC.... I was being sarcastic... I'm happy these folks are making gobs money on gaming violence. I cant image a better career than to sit back and invent games for people to waste their time with. Heck I even spend a few hours now and then killing in a computer fantasy world.

And I find it hard to believe you can survive being as unhappy as you are in your "want it to be" all liberal world.
