Verizon Business Shifting Some Job Responsibilities to Philippines from Cary

Verizon Business is shifting an unspecified number of jobs from its 1,800-person network operations center in Cary to a similar center in the Philippines, the company confirmed to WRAL.com Friday.

Among them are positions in a data-testing center. Some customer service positions also are affected. The company would not provide a specific number.

However, a spokesperson for the telecommunications giant said that the firm does not expect the moves to result in job losses.

“We don’t expect any layoffs,” said Jack Hoey, vice president of media relations for Verizon Business. “Some functions are being affected, but we have been very successful in finding positions in other parts of the business.”

Verizon employs some 1,800 people in Cary, according to Hoey.

"The new jobs offered will be commensurate with existing ones," Hoey added. "Some could even be a bit higher. But most will be about the same as current."

The network operations center is one of 10 that Verizon operates around the world. Verizon acquired the Cary campus when it bought MCI in 2005 for more than $8 billion.

Staff includes network engineers, customer service representatives and technicians.

"The Cary building is full and we expect to stay that way," Hoey added.

Hoey said the Philippines operation is being expanded to support Verizon’s growing customer base in Asia and the Pacific.

“Verizon Business is expanding its Network Operations Center in the Philippines to serve our customers doing business in the fastest-growing region of the world – the Asia Pacific area. These are Verizon Business jobs and are not outsourced,” he said.

Verizon Business focuses on large corporate customers and governments.

“Verizon Business delivers advanced data, voice and wireless services to large business and government across the globe,” he added in a statement. “ Verizon Business’ global network footprint serves 2,700-plus cities in 150 countries, and its customer relationships include 97 percent of the Fortune 500.

“Cary, with about 1,800 employees, will continue to be one of our major locations,” he added. “We have 321 offices in 75 countries, and a global work force of more than 32,000 of which about 6,000 are located outside the U.S. This global work force includes network and operations, sales and marketing, and a wide range of customer support activities.”
