NEW HILL, N.C. — A fault in an electrical system at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant caused an emergency generator to activate Friday, but the public wasn't in any danger because of the incident, a plant spokesman said Monday.

Shearon Harris has been shut down since Oct. 1 for refueling and maintenance, and crews were performing routine system testing when the fault occurred, said Mike Hughes a spokesman for Progress Energy, which owns the plant.

"The safety system worked exactly as designed," Hughes said in a statement. "There was never any danger to the public or plant employees. There was no loss of coolant."

Progress Energy crews are trying to determine the cause of the incident.
