CC Mangum Company, a building contractor of highways, bridges and industrial and commercial developments, is changing its name after a change in ownership.

The company was established in 1927 by Cleve Mangum. In 2004, former state Sen. Fred Smith purchased a 50 percent share of the company. Last year, Smith bought the remainder of the company and agreed to change the name.

Effective May 1, the company will become Fred Smith Company.

It will focus on three lines of business.

The Construction Division will do heavy highway, site work and home-building operations. The Properties Division will manage new home sales and rentals in company communities. The Fred Smith Company Sports Club consists of three area golf courses: Eagle Ridge, Riverwood and Hedingham, and five area athletic clubs.

Fred Smith Company employs about 500 people.
