RALEIGH, N.C. — Two online companies will pay refunds after the North Carolina attorney general found they misrepresented their services and used paid testimonials.

Stores Online and I-Mergent, both based in Utah, claim to help people start their own online businesses. For an up-front investment and monthly hosting fees, the companies would help users identify a product and set up an online store.

In an agreement reached Wednesday, the companies will offer refunds, allow new customers to cancel within three days and will better outline the requirements of online selling on their Web sites.

North Carolina consumers can apply for a refund until Oct. 6, 2008, by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
