APEX, N.C. — A robotics firm plans to break ground Thursday on a project that will double the size of its headquarters in Apex, and officials said the expansion would enable the company to hire up to 50 more employees.

ATI Industrial Automation makes robotic products for the aerospace, automotive, biomedical, electronics and research industries. The company, which was founded in 1989, employs 150 people and has offices in Michigan, China and Brazil.

“Global pressure for ever-higher manufacturing productivity continues to drive demand for our products. This facility expansion will carry us well into the future, enabling us to continue to reduce lead times while providing a superior level of quality,” Chief Executive Keith Morris said in a statement.
