I must confess that when I think of taxes I don't think of Twitter. But the TurboTax people want to change that, offering a new tax question and answer service at @TeamTurboTax, or on the Web at http://twitter.com/teamturbotax.
Intuit, the company behind TurboTax, said in the service announcement that "With expertise in everything from tax matters to product questions and technical support, the team will answer product questions, troubleshoot problems, and resolve customer service issues." When I went to visit the Twitter page, it seemed that many of the responses were about TurboTax issues, but there were some tax questions answered as well. Questions about deductibility, and where to mail tax returns. Sometimes the team could just give a quick answer, and sometimes they provided a pointer to additional information.
If you use Twitter you probably know that the backgrounds of Twitter home pages are customizable. TeamTurboTax has done a cool thing with its background -- it includes a list of all the people participating in this tax advice Twitter account (there were over a dozen people on the team when I checked it.) Each member of the team has a unique code which they use in the tweets they send out.
Now of course a Twitter message isn't going to substitute for an accountant or even tax preparation software. But if you have a quick question or need a pointer while you're deep in receipts and forms, this could be useful resource.
Hey, as long as I'm talking about Twitter, I should also mention that the North Carolina Department of Agriculture now has its own Twitter account! Check them out at http://www.twitter.com/ncagriculture.
