Still looking for ways to stay green? A long way away from the electronics recycling areas offered by Wake County? You might be able to take your old electronics to Best Buy.
Starting tomorrow, February 15th, Best Buy will allow consumers to bring up to two units per day per household to any US Best Buy store for recycling. This includes TVs and monitors up to 32", desktop computer CPUs and notebooks/laptops, small electronics, VCRs, DVD players, phones, and computer-related accessories (mice, keyboards, remotes, etc.)
There are a couple of things to keep in mind. Anything that has a screen (TV, monitor, laptop) will have a $10 recycling fee. BUT Best Buy will turn around and give you a $10 gift card as soon as you pay the recycling fee. Also, there are things that the recycling program can't take, including items with screens bigger than 32", console televisions (those TVs that have a wooden cabinet built around them and are set on the floor), anything containing Freon, microwaves, and appliances. (Best Buy does have a program for hauling away appliances, but that has a fee.)
It doesn't look like the consumer Web site has been updated with information about the new program, but you can get details on the corporate Web site at http://www.bestbuyinc.com/corporate_responsibility/our_planet_recycling.htm .
