Fay the Hurricane, the worst house guest ever. Ignores hint after hint after hint and will not leave. And just when you thought she's wandered west, she's headed back east with some rain for North Carolina. (Not that we don't need the rain, of course.) Soon she will be calling at 2am and trying to sell us gold mine stocks.
The State Archives at Florida, perhaps to remind everybody that as bad as it is, it could be a lot worse, has a photo exhibit of hurricanes and hurricane damage in Florida going back to 1896. Particularly chilling are the pictures from the 20s and the 30s showing a particular Florida landmark, and then another picture of what the landmark looked like after the hurricane got through with it.
As you might imagine, rain and flooding on the scale that Florida's been getting is bad news for libraries, museums, and other archival institutions. While I was wandering around the Florida State Archives site I came across a link to this video from HeritagePreservation.org. It's a ten-minute video on how to repair water-damaged archival items. If you've had a precious book or photograph that's gotten damaged by water, check out this video.
Fay, are you ever leaving?
