Fun with baby names

The Social Security Administration recently released the most popular baby names for 2007. (#1? Emily and Jacob.) In addition to releasing the list, the SSA also has a couple of fun tools available if you like playing with names.

The first tool lets you pick a year and then choose how many of the most popular names you can see -- up to 1000. The 2007 list goes from Jacob and Emily to Trystan and Zaniya. You can choose any year from 1880 onwards; if you're curious 1880 goes from John and Mary to Leonidas and Euna.

The other tool allows you to enter a name and check out its popularity over time. I checked on the name Max (congratulations Elizabeth Gardner!) and got a list of its popularity ranking for the last 100 years. The site also suggested other similar names. (Maximo?)

You can also get the top 1000 names by decade and, starting May 19, you can get the top 5 names by state. There were plenty of names here I'd never even heard of!

We named our son Nathan... after Guys and Dolls... I had no idea how many other women were naming their sons Nathan until after I did... and all of a sudden I noticed Nathan's EVERYWHERE!!!!!

A lot of the names of children today are so RIDICULOUS. These kids are gonna grow up and be adults with these crazy names. Names like Dakota, Brooklyn, Austin, etc. Can you imagine calling a 60 year old man Dakota? It sounds dumb because it is dumb.

I happen to like the names Dakota, Brooklyn, and Austin... just because they're different doesn't mean they're "RIDICULOUS"
