It shouldn't surprise you that the US government is blogging -- there are so many corporate and institutional blogs out there. There are so many government blogs that they even have their own page on USA.gov -- http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Reference_Shelf/News/blog.shtml. Let me tell you about a few of my favorite government blogs:
Eye Level -- http://eyelevel.si.edu/ -- Eve Level is the blog of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It updates unevenly -- sometimes every day, sometimes not for a week -- but has some wonderful background anecdotes and information on American art, and great GREAT illustrations and photos.
Gov Gab -- http://blog.usa.gov/roller/ -- They should have called this "Great Stuff for Citizens". Gov Gab doesn't get across the well-written and above all USEFUL information this blog provides. The front page at the moment includes information on credit reports, the Do Not Call Registry, and America Saves Week.
Library of Congress Blog -- http://www.loc.gov/blog/ -- It used to be that when I thought of the Library of Congress, I thought of a giant building stuffed with books. And while that's still the case, the LoC also has some amazing online exhibits and partnerships with other sites, like Flickr. This blog tells you about these exhibits, and about current events that have a tie into the LoC collection.
The federal government isn't the only level of government that blogs. The city of Wake Forest has a community planning blog, the State Library of North Carolina has a blog at http://statelibrarync.blogspot.com/ (along with pointers to other state blogs) and there's an interesting blog in Mecklenburg County called Fuzzy Tolerance.
Enjoy!
