Skip the Super Bowl, Get the Commercials
Today's the Super Bowl! Who are you rooting for? Personally I'm rooting for the Panthers. Oh, I know they're not playing. I'll root for them anyway.
Of course, the real reason I'm watching the Super Bowl is for the commercials, but I don't really have to watch the show in order to get to the commercials. There are plenty of places you can see the commercials -- even ones that aren't going to air.
(By the way, a recent poll by Harris Interactive indicates that 20% of Super Bowl viewers watch for just the commercials. Who knew?)
Yes, ones that aren't going to air! Some San Francisco-area companies have gotten together and created some low-budget commercials for their tech companies, probably really nostalgic for the late 90s, which marketing dollars flowed like water. You can check those commercials out on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=SuperDotComAdsXL . Warning: the Technorati ad, at least, suffers from a couple of marginal words and barely-sufficient bleeps.
Want to see what's going to get played on TV? IFilm has a list of previews available at its site -- see previews from Disney, Nationwide, and GoDaddy. IFilm also has Super Bowl classics (love that Levi's "crazy legs" commercial) and commercials from past years.
If you're feeling nostalgic, CBS.com has the top fifteen Super Bowl commercials of all time available for viewing online (and yeah, the Mean Joe Green Coke commercial is the first result. Check it out at http://www.cbs.com/specials/superbowls_greatest_commercials/ . You can also see the commercials from the Chevy Super Bowl Ad challenge -- ads created by teams of college students in the hope that they'd end up in the Super Bowl.
Where are this year's commercials? You'll be able to find them many places shortly after the game or even during the game. Yahoo Video has announced that it will make the commercials available as they air. YouTube will be making the commercials available right after the game. And I'm sure that there will be plenty of spoofs, spinoffs, and parodies following like an avalanche.
Enjoy the commercials -- and hey, maybe the game will be pretty good too!
