Burlington man dies after hitting tree

— A Burlington man is dead after his car ran off the road and hit a tree Saturday, according to authorities. 

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. on Durham Street. 

Vernell Ray Crisp Jr., 24, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu towards Elmira Street when his car ran off the road and struck a tree.

According to authorities, Crisp was treated at the scene, but died as a result of his injuries. 

Latina Stanley, 29, of Burlington was also in the car and was taken to Moses Cone Hospital.

    Cars and trees do not get along very well. Matter of fact-planes and trees get along even less.

    On Sept 11, 1974, an Eastern Airlines 727 landed 3.5 miles short of Douglas Airport in Charlotte. The last 100' -after going thru farm fields were in TREES. 72 of 82 on board died from that crash.
