Burgum: US Senate should have voted against flaring rule

Posted May 10

— North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum says he's disappointed that the U.S. Senate has voted against repealing a rule related to methane emissions.

The Senate voted 51-49 to reject a procedural motion objecting to the Bureau of Land Management's so-called flaring and venting rule.

Burgum says allowing the BLM rule in place will have detrimental impacts on some oil and gas operations on public lands.

Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota voted in support of the rule. She says it would not get in the way of proactive steps the state has taken to decrease flaring and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also supporting the energy industry and good jobs.

Republican North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven voted to support the resolution.
