Bunn waitress wins $1M in lottery game

Posted June 11, 2013

— A Bunn waitress has won a $1 million playing a North Carolina lottery scratch-off game, lottery officials said Tuesday.

Katie Wheless said she plans to use her winnings to buy a new car for herself and her fiancé.

Wheless said she went to the Eagle Mart on Bickett Boulevard after her Monday afternoon shift and purchased two $10 Monopoly tickets.

“I won $15 on the first ticket and was feeling pretty good,” Wheless said in a statement. “I scratched off the second one and I couldn’t believe it. I looked at it over and over again.”

Wheless chose to take her winnings as a $600,000 lump sum after taxes instead of annuity payments of $50,000 a year for 20 years, lottery officials said.

Wageslave is right, you always take the lump sum. A dollar today, is worth more than a dollar tomorrow.

I'll bet the new money casues marital problems between these two as well.

Is it a state law that your name and where you live has to be broadcast all over the planet if you win a certain amount? I'm happy for the girl, but now the leeches, crooks, and twice removed uncles nephews son will be out in full force in Bunn looking for her.

Great! glad to hear a hard working person won! Enjoy life and take care of yourself!! You will start seeing friends you never knew though! Don't let pressure to "help" drain you dry! People that try to help themselves never have to go begging, god will send you to them.

Kate, get yourself a good used car for yourself. That type of move is how rich people get rich and stay rich. Sure, blow a little on yourself and a little on the two of you, and then invest the rest.

Let your fiance get his own. He may not even be with you two years from now.

Take care of YOURSELF first, and this money will set you up for life.

Well good for her. On the surface she probably should have taken the twenty year payout, but taxes are going to go up, Government particularly the Feds refuse to reduce their size and cost, so more money will have to be seized.

I love BUNN (Home c/o 1994) I'm glad a hardworking soul won there.

I would've taken the 50k a year too ScubaG. Nice supplemental income for 20 years, and you could still invest a portion each year. $600k watching the balance get smaller with every purchase. Have fun though, it's a good balance to watch get smaller.

Nah, think about how much 50K was 20 years ago. You could buy a house. Now 50K will buy you a nice truck lol. Inflation will tear that 50k all apart in another 20 years.

    I'd take the lump sum.

Heard on the radio this morning that Katie's a student at Wake Tech, working two jobs and going to school at night. She took the lump sum so she could pay for her tuition to NCSU in the fall and not have to work so hard. LOVE it when someone like this hardworking girl gets a break!
