BUNN, N.C. — A Bunn waitress has won a $1 million playing a North Carolina lottery scratch-off game, lottery officials said Tuesday.

Katie Wheless said she plans to use her winnings to buy a new car for herself and her fiancé.

Wheless said she went to the Eagle Mart on Bickett Boulevard after her Monday afternoon shift and purchased two $10 Monopoly tickets.

“I won $15 on the first ticket and was feeling pretty good,” Wheless said in a statement. “I scratched off the second one and I couldn’t believe it. I looked at it over and over again.”

Wheless chose to take her winnings as a $600,000 lump sum after taxes instead of annuity payments of $50,000 a year for 20 years, lottery officials said.
