BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — A Brunswick County grand jury indicted a Boiling Springs Lakes police officer Monday night in the January shooting death of a teenager.

Officer Bryon Vassey was indicted for voluntary manslaughter in the killing of 18-year-old Keith Vidal.

Authorities responded to Vidal's home on January 5 after his parents called police, saying the teenager was suffering from a schizophrenic episode and was carrying a screwdriver in his hand.

Vidal's family said officers used a Taser on him before he was shot.

Two other officers involved, Boiling Springs Lakes Officer John Thomas and Brunswick County Sheriff's Office Deputy Samantha Lewis, were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.

Vassey has until noon Wednesday to turn himself in and will have a $50,000 bond, according to a statement from the district attorney's office representing Bladen, Brunswick and Columbus counties.
