Broyhill formally charged in Jamie Hahn's stabbing death

Jonathan Wayne Broyhill, 31, a longtime friend of Hahn's, had been recovering since last Monday at WakeMed from what Raleigh police say were self-inflicted injuries.

Broyhill, both of his wrists bandaged, was wheeled into the Wake County magistrate's office shortly after 11 a.m. where he was formally charged with first-degree murder.

Jamie Hahn, 29, died of her injuries on Wednesday; her husband, Nation Hahn, 27, was also stabbed but was treated and released from the hospital.

Broyhill is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury for Nation Hahn's attack.

Raleigh police haven't released details of the crime, but people close to the case have said that Broyhill was at the Hahns' home early Monday evening and had been getting ready for dinner when Nation Hahn heard screaming and found Broyhill stabbing his wife. She was able to escape and ran outside before collapsing in a neighbor's yard.

Also unclear is a motive.

Broyhill, however, had worked for Jamie Hahn's political fundraising firm, Sky Blue Strategies, and managed campaign funds for former Rep. Brad Miller.

Miller said last week that questions recently surfaced about nearly $60,000 in missing campaign funds and that Jamie Hahn had planned to confront Broyhill about the missing money. Jamie Hahn's stepfather has said that, when she did, Broyhill "just lost it."

Broyhill's next court appearance is scheduled for May 21. He has already been appointed a public defender, Joseph Arbour.

A spokesman for the Wake County Sheriff's Office said that, for medical reasons, Broyhill will be held at Raleigh's Central Prison, where there is a hospital.
