RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures hovering in the 40s Monday morning will set the stage for a milder week ahead.

Sunday evening and Monday morning temperatures were unseasonably cool, and daytime temperatures for the week ahead will follow that trend. Highs on Monday and Tuesday will hover in the low 70s, and Wednesday and Thursday will be even cooler with highs in the 60s.

"We should be close to 80 degrees this time of year," said WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth.

Skies will be dry and clear Monday, but the potential for rain and patchy sprinkles will move in as evening approaches. Overnight lows will hover in the low 50s.

Though Tuesday will be warmer than Monday, with that rise comes a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms. The potential for storms and rain will continue throughout the week and into the weekend.
