— A Fort Bragg soldier was sentenced Monday to six years in federal prison for downloading child pornography, authorities said.

Staff Sgt. Daryl Wingfield Hazam, 26, of Fayetteville, pleaded guilty in September to receipt of child pornography. An investigation determined Hazam, who was assigned to an Army Special Forces unit, had been downloading child pornography onto his computer, and a forensic examination found 300 illicit pictures and three videos of young children.

Come on guys, this penalty is way too stiff. It's not like he made the porn or did these things. We have criminals doing far less time for stealing and assaulting - even repeat offenders. Our penalties are all out of whack. Even DUI is more serious an offense than this in my opinion. I almost always say our penalties are too slack, but in this case we went overboard.

Six years in jail is "getting off easy"? While I do not approve of what he did, I definitely put people who look at this stuff in a different category from those who rape, fondle children, etc. If he had never done this sort of thing before, I would personally be more inclined to require therapy, not jail. Jail costs us money and does absolutely nothing to help us. After this guy is out of jail, he might then be a "sex offender" and have a very hard time finding a job. Perhaps he might be on public assistance the rest of his life. In what way does that "reform" him and why should the people be taxed to pay for this problem?

Really, I think most sentences are too stiff. I would not relax penalties on people using guns to kill people, but most other crimes are excessively punished.
