FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police searched Tuesday for at least two men who they say are wanted in connection with the shooting death of a decorated Fort Bragg soldier.

Sgt. 1st Class Sean Wayne Wells, 35, was killed around 8:45 p.m. Monday after the men forced their way into his home, at 7277 Beaver Run Drive.

Wells and the men began fighting, police said, before the shooting.

His wife, who was home at the time, escaped uninjured with their 4-year-old child and went to a neighbor's house to call 911.

In a recording released late Tuesday afternoon, she said the men, whom she described only as wearing black, entered through a door and wanted money and the keys to her 2012 Toyota Camry.

She said she heard three gunshots.

Police found the car Tuesday morning about 2 miles from the home.

Authorities have not commented on a motive for the shooting but said it does not appear to be random.

"We believe there was some type of relationship between the suspects and the family, so right now I can tell the residents here they generally have nothing to worry about," Fayetteville Assistant Police Chief Charles Kimble said.

Investigators haven't released a description of who they are looking for, but have said only that they believe they could be driving in a Dodge Dakota pickup truck.

Anyone with information can call the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-433-1856 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477. Crime Stoppers tips can also be submitted online.

Wells joined the Army in 1999 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group Airborne unit, the Army said. He served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Wells' awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, two Army Achievement medals, four Army Good Conduct medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the NATO Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Ranger Tab and the Special Forces Tab.
