Bragg soldier killed in Afghanistan

Posted August 13

— A Fort Bragg paratrooper was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the Department of Defense said.

Sgt. 1st Class Samuel C. Hairston, 35, of Houston, Texas, died in Ghazni, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire, officials said.

Hairston was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

"Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Hairston was an exceptional non-commissioned officer and a valued member of our team,” Lt. Col. Chris Hockenberry, Hairston’s battalion commander, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will never forget him.”

Hairston is survived by his wife, Staff Sgt. Tawana Hairston, and his son, Hayden.

I'm sorry to hear the bad news, RIP SGT. I am even sorrier to hear no enemy combatants were killed. Also, I thought they were not going out on patrol anymore. It's sad.
