Bragg soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Fort Bragg soldier died Friday after insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, the military announced Sunday.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier died Friday after insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, the military announced Sunday.

Sgt. Nicholas C. Fredsti, 30, of San Diego, served as team leader with the 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

Fredsti was on patrol in the town of Spedar when he was wounded in an insurgent attack. He was medically evacuated and later died of his injuries.

Since 2000, when Fredsti joined the Army, he deployed three times to Afghanistan and three times to Iraq. 

He was promoted posthumously to staff sergeant and awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the NATO Medal.

He is survived by his parents, Carl and Sherry Fredsti, of San Diego.
