Bragg paratrooper killed in Afghanistan

— An Army soldier based at Fort Bragg died Tuesday in Afghanistan after his unit was attacked by insurgents, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Donald V. Stacy, 23, of Avondale, Ariz., was killed by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar. He is a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart recipient.

Stacy was a squad leader in Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.

He is survived by his mother. This was his third tour of duty since joining the Army; he deployed to Iraq in 2006 and again in 2008.

    They join to serve, and if it means in warfare, that's what they join for.

    To many serving in our Armed Forces, it's a "calling". It's what they love to do.

    He was the 42 US KIA this month. This year, 199 Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen have died in Afghanistan. Losses are similar to last year's pattern... which eventually resulted in 499 US KIA.
