Bragg paratrooper dies in Afghanistan

A soldier based at Fort Bragg died Saturday in Afghanistan after he was found unresponsive in his room, military officials said Monday.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A soldier based at Fort Bragg died Saturday in Afghanistan after he was found unresponsive in his room, military officials said Monday.

The military said an investigation is underway into the death of Staff Sgt. Keith Rudd, 36, of Winder, Ga.

Rudd was a flight medic with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He joined the Army in 2003 and served two previous deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

His awards and decorations include three Air Medals, four Army Commendation, six Army Achievement, two Army Good Conduct, the National Defense Service, Afghan Campaign, Iraqi Campaign, Global War on Terrorism Service, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service and the NATO medals; the Noncomissioned Officer Professional Development, Army Service and two Overseas Service ribbons; and the Combat Medic and Army Aviation badges.

Rudd is survived by his father, Donald Rudd, of Sunnyville, Calif.
