FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Preparations were underway Friday as Fort Bragg prepares to welcome as many as 60,000 people for its Fourth of July celebration.

Military leaders don't often to discuss on-post security measures, but they said Friday that they're aware of the ISIS threat of attacks over the holiday weekend. Temporary fencing will be erected around the Main Post Parade Field on Friday, and visitors will pass through a security screening at the parade field on Saturday.

Officials said the public should feel safe coming to Fort Bragg.

"Fort Bragg has a wide variety of security measures that we always have in place. We adjust them for the Fourth of July, and then we have other security measures that are specifically for the Fourth of July setup," spokesman Tom McCollum said. "The only booms we expect anyone to hear are the fireworks."

Saturday's festivities, which begin at 1 p.m., will include a concert by country musicians Randy Houser and Easton Corbin. A 25-minute fireworks display on the Polo Field will include more than 1,000 rounds that will dance to the music.

"If it mentions, for instance, something red, then you'll have a red burst in the sky. If the song has a green word in it then you'll see some green fireworks," fireworks crew leader John Edwards said. "And they'll range according to the size of the shell, about how high they go and how wide they spread."

Across the street at the Main Post Parade Field, hundreds of tents will be set up for those who come to the celebration. Parking will be available for guests at the Womack Army Medical Center.

Several items are prohibited during Saturday's festivities:

  • Weapons
  • Glass containers (except baby bottles with milk or juice)
  • Cans
  • Aluminum bottles
  • Grills
  • Pets
