Bragg battalion commander to receive Bronze Star

A former commander of a Fort Bragg battalion will receive the Bronze Star Medal for Valor on Friday for his actions during a combat mission in Afghanistan in July 2013.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A former commander of a Fort Bragg battalion will receive the Bronze Star Medal for Valor on Friday for his actions during a combat mission in Afghanistan in July 2013.

Col. Brett G. Sylvia, former commander of the 307th Engineer Battalion, will receive the honor at 10 a.m. Friday at the 20th Engineer Brigade Staff Annex. 

The medal was approved for Sylvia for various actions on July 4, 2013, while leading his battalion in support of the Afghan National Army Kandak mission Operation Southern Swarm II. 

Fighting through injury, then-Lt. Col. Sylvia led the combined team and saved the lives of others, including an Afghan soldier. He was also presented a Purple Heart Medal for the injury he suffered during the operation. 

Sylvia is currently assigned to the U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort Bragg.
